Gearing up for some big end-of-summer shoots, we got a few new toys to help us get some awesome visuals and to have a little more fun on set, too. We shot in swimming pools all over Atlanta to train users on a new line of pool chemicals.
To capture the action both above and below the water, we used the Ikelite underwater housing for the 5D Mark III. Gaffer Extraordinaire Charles Bickelman wrangled all the scuba gear for Lance, who did the shooting and the diving.
For some creative landlocked shots, we used our new Ronin Handheld Gimbal system. The 3-axis system allows for seriously smooth and stable footage during all kinds of interesting and intricate moving shots.
And getting the beauty shots in the can was definitely a little easier with the aid of an 80-ft crane holding a 20ft x 20ft silk above the pool area. It kept the lighting crew from constantly battling the sun going behind the clouds. Now if we could only figure out a way to control the weather . . .
